Lets take a moment and think about the last time you were in your car, engine running, hands on the steering wheel, and your cell phone alerted you that you had a text. What did you do? Did you look at the text? Wait until you stopped at a red light to look at it and reply? Or did you simply ignore it?
I am the biggest anti-text-while-driving evangelist that I know. I have a few friends that have gotten into some seriously bad accidents because they were texting while they were driving. One of the accidents was fatal. I know A LOT of people that continue to drive and text. A few of them are probably reading this now. You know who you are because when I know you’re driving and texting to me I’ll ask you to stop texting me until you are off the road. I won’t even reply back to you if I know you’re texting and driving. Your life is more important to me than us just shooting the cyber shit.
That is why I am backing the “Red Thumb Reminder“. This isn’t just a reminder to yourself not to text while driving, this is a reminder to anyone and everyone who asks, “What’s with the red thumb nail?” This is how you bring light on the subject of texting and driving.
I know, I KNOW! So many people are against this movement. Just read the Youtube comments on it. But does it hurt to take 30 seconds and paint a thumbnail? Does it hurt to have a conversation about the fatalities that texting and driving causes? Do we really need to have a state or federal law banning the practice when it’s just fucking common sense? Be bold. Paint your thumbnail red and then watch the conversations begin. Tim and I painted ours. I’ve explained my red thumbnail no less than 10 times today. The red thumb reminder works. And, honestly, not one of those people I talked to had a bad thing to say about my red thumb. In fact, the consensus was that they were going to paint their thumbs red when they got home. The only negativity I’ve seen so far is on the Youtube comments. No surprise there at all.
