This is just my opinion, but if its getting near impossible to find a lethal drug to end the life of a death row inmate in a respectable manner why don’t we just go back to the days of firing squads, electric chairs, or gas chambers?
And – again, my opinion – isn’t an execution SUPPOSED to result in death?
The reason I bring this up is because of the “botched execution” of Oklahoma death row inmate Clayton Lockett. Now, before you feel all sorry for the way he was executed resulting in his death via heart attack…let me just tell you how this all came to be:
Clayton Lockett, along with two other accomplices – Shawn Mathis, and his own cousin Alfonso Lockett – busted down the door to gain access to an acquaintance that owed him $20. Yeah…twenty dollars. Back in 1999, Lockett and his friends kicked in the door to Bobby Bornt’s home while he was sleeping on the couch. Lockett beat Bornt using the butt of his shotgun. A few minutes later, a girl (Summer Hair)came to Bornt’s door to ask Bornt to go to a party with her. The three home invaders pulled Summer inside, hit her in the face, and threw her up against the wall. One of the three guys noticed there was another girl (Stephanie Neiman) sitting in a truck outside waiting for Summer to come back out with Bornt. The guy who noticed Stephanie in the truck put a gun to Summer’s head and ordered her to call Stephanie into the home. Stephanie trotted into Bornt’s home only to be hit several times before the keys to her truck were surrendered.
All three hostages were then ushered into Bornt’s 9-month old son’s bedroom, who had been sleeping through this ordeal. Alfonso (Lockett’s cousin) decided he wanted a blowjob, so he pulled Summer into the bathroom to have her give him a blowjob. He then pulled her into Bornt’s bedroom where he raped Summer. When he finished, he left Summer in the bedroom when Clayton Lockett came into the bedroom and raped Summer both vaginally and anally. He then had her perform a blowjob on him. When he was done with her, he ushered her back into Bornt’s son’s bedroom where Summer and Stephanie’s hands and mouth were bound with duct tape.
Clayton Lockett then instructed Shawn Mathis to head to the garage to look for a shovel. Clayton Lockett then loaded Bornt and his son into Bornt’s pickup, while Shawn Mathis and Alfonso Lockett loaded Summer and Stephanie into Stephanie’s truck, and they all headed out to a rural area of Oklahoma. Stopping at a country road outside of Perry, Oklahoma Clayton Lockett got out of the lead truck to walk back to Stephanie’s truck where he pulled the two girls out. Clayton Lockett pulled Summer down into a ditch on the side of the road and raped her yet again. He also forced her to give him another blowjob. When he was done with her, Clayton took her to the pickup he was driving. While she was sitting there, Mathis decided it was his turn with Summer, he took her back to Stephanie’s pickup where he forced her to give HIM a blowjob. During her oral performance, Mathis grabbed her by the head and told her, “In order for you to live, this is what you have got to do,”
After all the raping and the blowjobs, Clayton Lockett told Mathis to start digging a hole. While Mathis was digging, Clayton Lockett was said to have stated, “Someone has got to go.” Mathis then when to Stephanie’s truck, pulled her out and drug her to the hole he had just dug. Clayton Lockett shot her. He was going to shoot her a second time since she didn’t die from the one shot, but the gun had jammed. He walked back to the pickup truck to fix the jam all the while Stephanie was screaming through duct tape on her mouth. Once the gun was fixed, Clayton Lockett then walked back to the hole where Stephanie laid screaming…and shot her again. She still was not dead. In fact, she could be heard saying – through the duct tape – “Oh, God, please, please, please!” Clayton Locket ordered Mathis to bury Stephanie, even though Mathis kept insisting that she was alive. Clayton didn’t care as he walked back to the pickup truck. Clayton Lockett and Shawn Mathis buried Stephanie Neiman alive.
When Clayton got back to the truck, he ordered Summer Hair and Bobby Bornt never to mention any of the events that just took place. And, to add emphasis, he ordered them at gunpoint and with the threat of inevitable death to either of them if word of Stephanie’s murder reached the authorities. Stephanie had previously NOT agreed to not telling the police about the raping and blowjobbing…that’s why she was singled out and killed.
Well, it DID reach authorities. The next day Bobby Bornt and Summer Hair turned Clayton Lockett, Shawn Mathis, and Alfonso Lockett in. Clayton eventually confessed to the brutal and heinous murder of Stephanie Neiman. A trail jury found him guilty of First Degree Murder and sentenced him to the death because of five aggravating circumstances;
- Lockett had been convicted of felonies before this incident for using or threatening to use violence;
- Lockett had threatened the great risk of death to more than one person;
- the murder was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel;
- the murder was committed for the purpose of avoiding or preventing a lawful arrest or prosecution;
- there was a looming threat that Clayton Lockett would not hesitate to murder or use violence again in the future which makes him a continuing threat to society.
Clayton Lockett was also found guilty of one count of Conspiracy, one count of First Degree Burglary, three counts of Assault With A Dangerous Weapon, three counts of Forcible Oral Sodomy, four counts of First Degree Rape, four counts of First Degree Kidnapping (Stephanie Neiman, Summer Hair, Bobby Bornt, and Bornt’s nine-month old son), two counts of Robbery by Force and Fear, all of this after two or more counts of former felony convictions. For these non -capital crimes, the jury sentenced Clayton Lockett 2,285 years and 90 days imprisonment to be added to his death sentence.
And people are concerned because dude had a heart attack during his execution process? Do you think Clayton Lockett was concerned about Stephanie Neiman (who was only 19) as he shot her twice and buried her alive? Nope. In fact, the court records say he laughed as dirt was being thrown on her while she was crying and screaming for mercy. I seriously have no sympathy for Clayton. He deserved what he got. He actually got the easy way out. If I were Overlord, he would’ve been shot twice, then been buried alive. Just like he felt Stephanie deserved. Lockett got the death penalty…and he died. In my opinion, the end result of his “botched execution” is what was SUPPOSED to happen. Clayton Lockett is no longer a threat to society. I don’t see any problem here.
