Back in 2001 there was the dumbest movie I had ever seen. It was called “Wet Hot American Summer” about a summer camp (Camp Firewood) where the focus was on the counselors. It was the last day of the summer camp and, to be honest with you, if you weren’t stoned you would not have found this movie very funny. I didn’t know any of the cast members at the time. And I was trying to figure out how a vegetable can is able to talk, or why these 20somethings were acting like they were 16 or 17 years old. But that was part of the hilarity. The movie grew on me through the years and we’ve watched it a few times since then.
Fast forward 14 years to 2015 where Netflix rebooted the movie to make an eight-episode miniseries. It’s called “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp”. The creators/writers David Wain and Michael Schowalter have – somehow – gotten almost ALL the same cast members to replay their original parts. The cast NOW is phenomenal since they’ve grown into their careers. And this series is nothing short of hilarious! We watched all eight episodes in one weekend, and we giggled the entire time.
I was going to list the incredible cast, but the list is very long. So I’m going to direct you to the IMDB page. At every turn there’s an actor that you know and love well. It is amazing they’re all back and now…14 years later…they’re playing the same teenage counselor they played before, which makes the jokes and one liners just THAT much more funnier. Molly Shannon marrying guys she just met three minutes prior to the wedding made me giggle uncontrollably. Seeing Chris Meloni with that stupid 1980’s wig…I could not stop laughing. And I wasn’t even remotely stoned. And to watch Elizabeth Banks (who is actually 41) play a 24 year old pretending to be a 17 year old is hilarious. There were so many good and cheesy parts of this series that it’s tough to narrow down my favorite.
Want a good time? Pull up “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” on Netflix. Sit back and let the giggles come rolling in. You won’t regret it.
