It was my turn to pick out the Friday night movie at the House O’ Chuck. I’ve been yelling at my television in the studio all week (I tend to keep it tuned to MSNBC at a very low volume because they love Drumpf, apparently). So I needed to laugh. A lot. Quickly.
I decided on “Popstar” because I have this not-so-secret mancrush on Andy Samberg ever since seeing his “Lonely Island” group did tunes like “Jizz In My Pants” or “I’m On A Boat” or “I Just Had Sex“. I can now add a new song to this list of favorite Lonely Island tunes… “Equal Rights” with Pink. And there’s a deleted song that’s on the album, it’s called “Fuck Off“. HILARIOUS!
Popstar is a film that is set in documentary style. We follow the rise and fall of The Style Boys, an all boy band that break up because Kid Conner (Andy Samberg) wants to go solo. He rises, then falls, then rises and falls and then rises again. His solo name is Conner4Real and I’m a huge fan. I know it’s a movie, but I’ve already watched all the songs on Youtube. They’re THAT great. Even the ones they’ll never play on any radio station such as “Finest Girl (Bid Laden Song)“. Popstar has every celebrity you could ever imagine. They pop in and out so fast that it’s tough to keep track of them. Mariah Carey, Pink, Seal, Justin Timberlake, Quest Love, Usher, Ringo Starr, Sarah Silverman, so many celebrities.
There were two points that made me laugh out loud…LOUDLY. When Owen is introduced to his new DJ helmet and he learns there’s a light at the top of it. And when Conner and Lawrence meet again in the limo after being apart for so long. Watch the windows where all the fans are hovering and showing their admiration for Conner. Don’t let your eyes off the windows.
This is a fun movie. I bet it’s even more fun (if that’s possible) stoned. This was the laugh I definitely needed. Ben Stiller used to be my favorite go-to for laughter, now its Andy Samberg. Move over Rogan and Franco…there’s a new guy on the bigscreen. We rented this movie tonight, but the first thing Tim said when the credits stopped rolling was, “We’re definitely buying this movie.”
Yes we are, Tim. Yes we are.
