Tim and I took a little bit of time to get this next installment of Alice’s adventures on our Friday night movie ritual. The first movie (Alice In Wonderland) wasn’t a very good film to us. Mainly because we couldn’t believe that the same Tim Burton line up were in this movie as well. Can’t the man find other people to act in his movies? At any rate, this second movie was incredibly better than the first one. There must’ve been a team assembled to make sure this movie didn’t suck as much as the first one. And they added Sacha Baron Cohen into the mix which, for me, made the movie even THAT much better.
Alice sets out to save the HiTop family from the evil “off with their heads” Queen Iracebeth. The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) has sunk into a deep depression and Absolum (Alan Rickman R.I.P.) has come to Alice to enlist her help to bring Hatter out of his depression before it becomes the end of him. Alice returns to Underland to confront Time himself to get to the past and investigate what has happened to the Mad Hatter’s family. Meanwhile, there’s a side story line as to how the Red Queen (Iracebeth played by Helena Bonham Carter) and the White Queen (Mirana played by Anne Hathaway) came to be enemies instead of the sisters they could have been.
The movie (to me) was made so much better by introducing Sacha Baron Cohen as Time. His lines were classic Sacha Baron Cohen lines…and they delivered their punch when warranted. “Stupid ‘me shaped’ corridors.” The movie had so much to look at in a steady constant stream. It was tough to take my eyes off the screen for even one second. I think that might just be a problem I have since I’m an artist and I love seeing visuals already done to get inspiration in MY future projects. The other reason I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen is because it was extremely difficult to understand what any character was saying half the time. Either their accent was very heavy, or the volume levels on their lines was very low in contest with the music.
Being a captain on her father’s ship, “Wonder”, Alice knows how to steer through difficult – or IMPOSSIBLE – situations. She has to steer through the past using Time’s chronosphere. And, well, I’ll leave the rest up to you to figure out. I mean, after all, it IS a Disney movie. Does any Disney movie end with tragedy?
Again, this is a way better movie than the first one. Tim is excited that we’ve added this installment to our movie collection. I’ve been an “Alice In Wonderland” fan since I was 10 years old, and while the first movie didn’t do Lewis Carroll’s brilliant story any form of justice, “Alice Through The Looking Glass” may have turned my loyalty back to the story I’ve loved all these years. The movie was fun. Predictable…yet enjoyable to follow the path of the story. I just really don’t think I’d have enjoyed it if Sacha Baron Cohen wasn’t in it. He absolutely made the movie for me. I want him to make another movie just like this, but solo. His costume and accessories were incredible. And it doesn’t hurt that I still (STILL) have this huge crush on the guy.
Also…watch Anne Hathaway’s hands. Tim and I kept doing what she does with her hands through the entire flick. How did she keep that up for so long?? Finally, every time I heard Alan Rickman’s voice I got a little weepy. It makes me so sad that the world (my world!) has lost such a brilliant actor. When Absolum fist appeared and Alan Rickman’s uttered the first sentence both Tim and I went “Ooooh” in sad unison.
